Our summer theatre camp production by ACT I STAGE! gives a fresh look at American history from the fateful journey of Christopher Columbus to the heroes of modern day. American Hysterical is an original work of historical fiction. In the interest of maintaining a suitable play length and achieving some measure of originality and entertainment, liberties have been taken regarding actual dates and events depicted.

Additional funding for this production came from grants from the Louise Gilchrist Charitable Trust and the Vinton Community Foundation
Performance Photographs

Directors Marcy Horst and Mary Horst address the audience before each performance.

"Columbus
Got Us Into This," the opening production number, performed
by Christopher Columbus's Crew.

Christopher Columbus snoozes as crew members of his ship sight land.

"Land Ho!"

Uncle Sam and Liberty Belle narrate the opening segments of the show.

Pilgrim and Indian men congratulate themselves on their hunting skills.

Pilgrim
and Indian women complain that they are doing all the work
while the men sit around and talk.

Pilgrims and Indians at the first Thanksgiving sing the hymn "We Offer Thanksgiving."

Boston colonists complain about their taxes.

In
one of the most impressively performed segments of the show, high school
cast members of American Hysterical portrayed angry Boston colonists,
extolling the virtues of tea while berating King George III for the tea
tax in the song and dance number "Georgey, You've Gone too Far!"

These
very talented students were a valuable component of the company,
serving as role models for younger, less experienced cast members.

Paul
Revere sends a message with his faithful
dog Copper, while Uncle Sam looks on.

Paul Revere wakens the Minutepersons.

Paul
Revere and two Minutemen graciously turn their backs as a patriot woman
removes her petticoat so they can use its cloth to muffle the sound of their
oars.

In a
scene played in the balcony, the Reverend watches as Paul Revere's
son Joseph places two lanterns in the steeple of the Old North Church.

The Minutemen march off to battle.

General George Washington reads the Declaration of Independence to Betsy Ross.

"Doesn't that just stir your heart?"

General Washington shares his idea for a possible American flag.

A
sleeping Betsy Ross sees a circle of stars in a dream, giving
her the inspiration for the design of the first American flag.

Annie Horst as the Statue of Liberty displays the first American flag.

Lady Liberty raises her torch.

Immigrants arrive at Ellis Island.

President Jefferson asks Meriweather Lewis to embark on a journey of exploration.

Lewis and Clark travel through rough country.

"What's that?"

Humor
abounds in American Hysterical. Here, Lewis and Clark guides
Sacagawea and Charbonneau discover a fork in the river.

Early settlers bury their dead.

Lewis and Clark contemplate their finished journey.

President Lincoln at a whistle stop.

Well wishers meet the newly elected sixteenth president.

Samuel Morse explains the telegraph machine to Benjamin Franklin.

Benjamin Franklin gets a demonstration of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell.

Thomas Edison explains the incandescent light.

Inventors
Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Morse, Alexander Graham Bell, and
Thomas Edison do a song and dance number praising Toll House cookies
in the finale to the first act.

At the opening of Act Two, a giant radio dominates the stage.

A group of depression era homeless gather to keep warm by a burning barrel.

A
scene portraying the depression shows homeless persons gathering
around a radio for one of President Roosevelt's fireside chats.

President Roosevelt addresses the nation by radio.

The Wholesome sisters perform a radio commercial for Ultra Bright Toothpaste.

Pint
sized hoofer Corey Cooling and his partner Megan Horst brought down the
house as they danced up a storm in the 50's number "Rock Around the
Clock."

For "Rock Around the Clock," the radio is transformed into a juke box.

Neil
Armstrong plants the American flag on the moon. Note the ingenious space
suits
dotted with bicycle reflectors, with upturned plastic wastebaskets used as
helmets.

"We came in peace for all mankind."

"I already told you no."

Gathering for the Freedom Rally.

The Freedom Rally

Military Heroes.

Civilian Heroes

"You
look very American."
"Hysterical,
Gram."

The cast gathers on stage for the finale to the Freedom Rally.

In
the visually thrilling finale to American Hysterical, the entire cast of
over
80 young performers filled the Palace stage to create a living American flag.

In the lobby of the Palace Theatre, cast members gather to await their entrance for the finale.
