First Event Series Offering of the Season Opens at the Palace This Weekend

WORDS AND MUSIC

BY SKEET POWERS

Sponsored by Clingman Pharmacy

Many ACT I veteran members and supporters will recall the year 1986 when the first locally written musical debuted on our stage - Lovingly Yours, by Skeet Powers. Our friend Skeet has been at it again, and this month ACT I offers Words and Music, a collection of 25 songs, a handful of poems and prose, and a readers’ theatre, all written and arranged by this Benton County celebrity.

This collection of Skeet’s creative mission spans a lifetime of more than seventy years. He shares with us his experiences with love, his world, and his faith. Twenty ACT I vocalists, actors, and musicians, directed by Pat Lyons and under the musical direction of Lori Ferguson, come together in this production to offer something for everyone; top tapping 40’s ballads, a country western ditty, hymns, and even a bit of science fiction.

The show opens this Saturday, November 10th, and runs Sunday the 11th and the following Saturday and Sunday, November 17th and 18th . All performances begin at 2:00 PM. Company players and musicians include Lee Bendull, Gary Collins, Ray Bookmeier, Lois Ewins, Bunny Feller, Lori and Mike Ferguson, Stan Geiken, Al Harms, Gerald and Marcy Horst, Pat Lyons, Hane Powers, Colleen Stufflebeam, Kathy Tranel, Bill Tucker, Don Weideman, MaryAnn Welchel, Dan Wiley, and Alan and Janet Woodhouse. Kevin Bookmeier steps in as technical director, with Austin and Lu Karr assisting.

Skeet joins the company during the last number of ACT I playing his trademark ukulele, and again during the production finale singing a beautiful hymn which underscores his remarkably powerful and simple faith in God.

Words and Music by Skeet Powers is an eclectic mix of song, dance, poetry and prose that will tickle your funny bone one minute and have you wiping away a tear the next. This ACT I Events Series production promises nonstop entertainment at the easy-on-your-pocketbook price of $2.00. You can’t afford to miss it!

Books of Skeet’s poetry will be available in the Palace lobby.

Remember, Words and Music by Skeet Powers is just the first offering in our Events Series for Season 2001 - 2002.  Join us next month for a Poetry Reading at the 4th Street Coffee Company, the classical recital Intermezzo II in January, our readers' theatre production of The Titanic Disaster Hearings in April, and a family recital, Family Affair, in June!  All Events Series performances are only $2.00 per person and all are sponsored by Clingman Pharmacy!

The ACT I Ticket information line and Palace Theatre Box Office number is 472-9957.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum Closes Successful Run

Will the Real Virgin Please Stand Up?

A timeless visual comic bit that for centuries has never failed to please – multiple characters going in and out of doors but who fail to see each other. Here, during the climactic chase scene in which Hero and Philia attempt their escape, Halane Cummings as Domina (dressed as Philia), Rick Murphy as Hysterium (dressed as Philia), and Sara Arnold as the real Philia pass in and out of two different doors in the house of Senex before each discovers the other two in this very funny bit from our recent production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

ACT I’s first voyage into the world of Stephen Sondheim sailed into ACT I history as one of our most artistic and popular successes, judging by audience reactions to the wildly funny musical farce set in ancient Rome. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum ran for seven performances last month, including a sold out house on Friday, October 12 for the national convention of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, honoring Sherry McLaughlin of Mt. Auburn, that group’s newly installed president. The cast of eighteen carried us through this fast paced romp in fine style. Congratulations to all on a job well done!

Below, four large tour busses fill virtually the entire block as members of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary arrive at the theatre from their convention in Amana for a special performance of Forum.

Tea and Shakespeare

Think of cucumber sandwiches; scones with strawberry jam topped with clotted cream, all served alongside a pot of freshly brewed tea, rounded off with readings from the works of William Shakespeare.  You don’t have to wait for your next trip to London – now you can have this quintessentially English experience right here in Vinton!

In advance of ACT I’s first Shakespeare production, the cast and crew of Romeo and Juliet would like to invite you to tea!  Beginning November 1, our actors will be available to serve an elegant English afternoon tea to your group of four or more guests, your place or ours, on the date of your choice.  You’ll enjoy a variety of fine teas, served with an ample selection of sweets and savories. Then our actors will top off your teatime experience with readings from Shakespeare’s greatest works.

The cost for Tea and Shakespeare is $7.00 per person, or $5.00 if you are a season ticket holder for Season 2001- 2002.  At the time of your tea, you’ll be able to purchase your ticket to Romeo and Juliet for $2.00 off the regular box office price.

We ask a minimum of four guests. Dates are subject to availability. For more information or to book your private performance of Tea and Shakespeare, e-mail us at act1ofBC@aol.com.

ACT I PLAY SELECTION COMMITTEE

WANTS YOUR INPUT!

Although barely into our newest ACT I season, the ACT I Play Selection Committee is already beginning its work on the 2002-2003 season, and we welcome your ideas. All ACT I members are invited to attend the first working meeting of the Play Selection Committee on Sunday, November 11, at 4:00 PM. This informal meeting will be held at the Palace Theatre following the "Skeet Powers" performance.

The ACT I Board has final say on season selections, but it is the duty of the Play Selection Committee to put together a reasonable variety of titles for the Main and Event Series, as well as for the ACT I Stage! Children’s Theatre. If you have an interest in future ACT I offerings, please feel welcome to attend this meeting.

Member of the Month

Skeet Powers

Long-time Vinton resident Skeet Powers became a member of the ACT I community in 1986 with the production of Lovingly Yours, a musical he wrote and arranged. Lovingly Yours played to sold out houses at Tilford Auditorium, and Skeet’s newest offering, Words and Music by Skeet Powers promises to do the same.

Over the past seven decades Skeet has been creating a variety of poetry, prose, lyrics, and music. A few churchgoers may have been lucky enough to hear parts of his eclectic collection, as some select pieces have been performed at Wesley United Methodist Church. You may also have been privileged to hear a ballad or two if you were stationed at Pearl Harbor during World War II. Some of Skeet’s songs were performed on base at the Officer’s Club. However, very few of Skeet’s works have been enjoyed outside of his own living room.

Together with his wife, Evelyn, Skeet is known for his dedication to the students and families of the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School, and is a committed member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton. His steady faith in God was a strong theme throughout Lovingly Yours, and reappears in Words and Music. Another thematic thread in Skeet’s material is love and family. One lovely song in the first act, Evelyn, was, of course, written for his wife, whom Skeet fondly refers to as "Evy." Another of Skeet’s sentimental tunes is entitled Hane and is dedicated to Skeet and Evy’s adopted daughter, Hane.

A generous, soft-spoken man, whose life’s work speaks volumes, Skeet Powers, poet and composer, is an inspiration and blessing to ACT I of Benton County. He has chosen to share his creativity, artistry, and loving faithfulness freely with his friends, family, and neighbors. ACT I looks forward to Skeet III!

ACT I TRIVIA QUIZ

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum had everyone rolling in the aisles with laughter. But wait! Didn’t we tell you to watch carefully, because there’d be a quiz afterward? Well, here it is! When you were laughing so hard, did you retain all the textual details of the story? Let’s see what you remember!

  1. What compliment did Philia pay Hero when they first met?
  2. What was the principal ingredient in the sleeping potion Pseudolous mixed for Philia?
  3. Why didn’t Philia drink the potion?
  4. What served to reveal the secret true identities of Miles Gloriosis and Philia, that they were actually the long lost children of Eronius?
  5. Why did Senex return home with the bust of his wife Domina?
  6. While impersonating a sooth sayer, what did Pseudolous instruct Eronius to do?
  7. In order to con Marcus Lycus into sending Philia out of his home, what did Pseudolous persuade Lycus was wrong with her?
  8. What was the price paid by Miles Gloriosus for Philia?
  9. ESSAY QUESTION – EXTRA CREDIT! The opening number of Forum, "Tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight!" easily defines the current ACT I season. "Tragedy tomorrow" might well refer to our next Main Stage production, Romeo and Juliet following our "comedy tonight" -- Forum. These two plays couldn’t be more different. Or could they? How many similarities can you think of between A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Romeo and Juliet?

With a stunning variety and volume of no less than thirty original songs, Words and Music by Skeet Powers is a must-see for ACT I viewers. As a member of the performing company, I’ve enjoyed meeting the humble ukulele player who artfully arranged so many lovely tunes. I find it incredible that while Skeet wrote four part chorale arrangements and various accompaniment scores, he is unable to play his own music on the piano. He admits to having a few piano lessons as a youth, but confesses he never mastered the art. If only my limited stint at the piano had yielded so great a reward! I pray we do his work justice, and hope you’ll come to the Palace to honor Vinton’s own, Mr. Powers. Skeet will be there - waiting to greet you!
