Ledge, Ledger, and the Legend

by Rachel Kramer

The Act I Event Series dinner theater production of Ledge, Ledger, and the Legend was a comical success!  The "lively" cast of Steve Auld, Anthony Bopp, and Rick Primmer entertained a sell-out crowd on Friday night, and 24 patrons Saturday night.  This event was under the talented direction of Mary Horst and Alexander Vasquez.  The show was paired with the wonderful atmosphere of the Vinton Country Club, that had creatively been transformed into the "Rooftop Café".  The café setting and a delicious meal set the stage for this unique show.  From the sound of the crowd's laughter, I know everyone enjoyed this performance from the beginning to the end.  After the show, we received an encore...Rick brought around his "briefcase of death", which paired with cheesecake, added a deliciously, dark ending to an A+ evening!   Thank-you to the sponsors for this event, Betterton Chiropractic, and River City Graphic Solutions.

Note From The Directors:
This was the first time I'd been the lone female among the cast and crew for a show.  I liked it!  Originally, I was a little concerned about directing Ledge, Ledger and the Legend simultaneously with my high school musical, Seussical, but these guys made it easy every step of the way.  They all know haw to make you laugh (and wince) and they can construct a building in an afternoon!  It's funny how each of them knew what I meant, even when that wasn't exactly what I said.  Thanks to Jill, Sandy, Pam and Tina for laying the ground work for me.  Truly, Tony, Steve, Rick, and Alex are ACT I gems.

Mary

About all I can say is that great things happen artistically when you have very talented people working together on a performance.  This was one of the most fun shows I have been associated with and I am blessed to have such a talent as Mary to mentor me on the nuances of organization, vision, and presentation.  The Country Club staff, led by Robin Martin, put together a wonderful meal and atmosphere that truly tied the whole thing together.  It was a blast!

AUDITIONS ANNOUNCED

Auditions for the musical comedy Nunsense will be held on Thursday, December 6 at 6:30 and Saturday, December 8 at 1:00 p.m. at the ACT I Studio located above Clingman’s Pharmacy at 106 East Fourth Street in Vinton. Nunsense was written by Dan Goggin.

The Plot: An unfortunate convent cooking accident causes most of the order of the Little Sisters of Hoboken to die of botulism. Not having enough money to bury the four remaining sisters (who are temporarily being stored in the freezer), the nuns stage a variety show to raise money.

There are five characters. All roles require the ability to dance and all of the characters have solo songs as well as harmonize with the other singers. The roles are:

Sister Mary Regina – The Mother Superior. Feisty and quick witted, her bark is worse than her bite. Committed to the convent, but an actress at heart, she can’t resist the spotlight. Mezzo soprano/alto vocal range.

Sister Mary Hubert – The Mistress of Novices. Second in command. Always competing with Mother Superior, she is strict but knows how to kick up her heels. Mezzo soprano/alto vocal range. She ‘belts out’ one number in gospel style.

Sister Robert Ann – Streetwise and tough but with a heart of gold. A constant source of aggravation for Mother Superior. Talks in a Brooklyn accent. Mezzo soprano/alto vocal range

Sister Mary Amnesia – A sweet nun who has lost her memory. Naïve. Soprano vocal range.   She looks at each new day with childlike joy. In one song, she uses a puppet – as a “ventriloquist” of sorts. She carries both song and conversation with this precocious puppet, playing both roles.

Sister Mary Leo – The novice who wants to become the first nun ballerina. Soprano vocal range. Fresh and wide-eyed, she is easily led astray.

Sponsors for the show are Clingman Pharmacy and The Vinton Eagle.
