ACT I STAGE!
for
Season 2008 - 2009
This season, Camp Creamery returns to ACT I, this time for our Second Stage Camp in Van Horne for the musical revue A Star is Born, while Stage One Camp in Vinton Produces the "mirthful medieval musical" All's Well That Ends Swell. Enjoy this look back at all the previous ACT I STAGE! productions since the program began in March of 1999!

ACT I again offers two summer theatre camps for the young people of Benton County. During the week of June 11 - 15, we ran Camp Creamery at the Palace Theatre in Vinton, a one week camp in which our students are able to work with actors from the Old Creamery Theatre Company of Amana in producing a show to run at the end of the week. The show, Kids' Kabaret, created, produced, and directed by Creamery actors Sean McCall, Deb Kennedy, and Jackie Wynes, was performed on June 16 and 17. The show was a wonderful opportunity for our young actors and gave them a chance to perform with professional actors! Our month long Second Stage Camp in Van Horne creates a production of the children's musical Flying Colors by Claire and Monte Montgomery. The play is directed by Mary Horst and runs at the Benton Community Schools Auditorium in Van Horne on June 29, 30, and July 1. Approximately 45 students participated in each of the two theatre camps!

About
ACT I STAGE!
ACT I STAGE!, which began performing in March of 1999, was created to foster a love of live theatre in the youth of Benton County. The vision behind the program is for a young people's acting company that can provide elementary school patrons with an age appropriate children's theatre series, under the guidance of qualified adult mentorship.

Bridge to Terabithia -- April, 1994
Beginning with The Man Who Came to Dinner in 1980, school age performers have been a vital part of our community theatre. In 1994 we staged our first production that featured youth in major roles, Bridge to Terabithia. Since these first shows, well over 400 students in pre-school through grade 12 have had the opportunity to participate in ACT I through such productions as Lovingly Yours, Bridge to Terabithia, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, The Miracle Worker, The Sound of Music, How to Eat Like a Child, Life with Father, Oliver!, Bye Bye Birdie, The Secret Garden, Life with Mother, A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet, Monster Medley Spooktacular, Lost in Yonkers, Annie, The Music Man, several variety shows, and our Intermezzo recitals. In 1999, ACT I STAGE! was created to produce an age specific children's theatre series. Since March of that year, STAGE! has brought to life The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Prince and the Pauper, The Velveteen Rabbit, Hansel and Gretel, Charlotte's Web, The Emperor's New Clothes, a triple bill of The Red Shoes, Stone Soup, and Henny Penny, another triple bill of Ogre Here, Ogre There; Once Upon a Vine, The Truly Remarkable Puss in Boots, American Hysterical, Mother Goose Memories, The Adventures of Beatrix Potter, Let Down Your Hair, Rapunzel, The Princess Plays, Calamity James, and this season's Kids' Kabaret and Flying Colors.

In addition to providing performing opportunities, ACT I STAGE! teaches its young participants about every aspect of theatre, including many different technical elements. Below, for his role as the evil dwarf in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in 1999, seven year old actor Jason Long learned first hand about just how complicated makeup could be. Below, he is pictured sitting patiently before each performance as a full beard is created on his face using a latex base, spirit gum adhesive, and crepe wool hair. The wool is ironed, applied to the latex in several layers, then brushed and trimmed before the rest of the makeup is added.

Below, Jason is seen on the set in full costume and makeup,
and the effect is complete.
